I recommend the roasted corn nuts sold throughout the Rialto market. These put you in the proper mood to understand why the painters Carpaccio and Bellini truly deserve the food and drink that were named after them. Venice also has a wealth of paintings depicting dinner....don't miss Tintoretto's Creation of the Animals which shows eleven distinct species of fish.
The Man Who Ate Everything. Jeffrey Steingarten. As for the rest of the book, it was comme ci comme ca. Steingarten, longtime food writer at US Vogue actually tilts at windmills like fat and sugar: he says both are good for you! Oh, and there's an excellent recipe for fruit pies.
